Tools & Spare Parts
Badger's travelling toolkit has been an object of intermittent obsession over the years, which I finally buckled down to completion(ish) during The Covid Lull. My approach to tools and spare parts comes from the 'over-prepared' (AKA 'heavy') end of the spectrum -- a result of me typically riding alone and often in remote areas. For the first few years with Badger, I was toting around a mashup of his stock KTM toolkit, plus a tool roll previously assembled for a KLR, plus some other stuff. In 2020 I finally got around to purposefully consolidating all that, and throughout 2021 I further refined its contents while self-performing various 30,000 km service jobs. Here's where I've ended up:
#1. Canvas tool roll (Princess Auto c.2010)

A few curiosities and quirks:
- The stock kit included a 12mm male hex bit, purportedly for the stator housing removal plug, but that is the wrong size for what is actually 14mm on the bike! I replaced the KTM stator plug with the CJ Designs version (CJD-ALP-BK) which requires a simple 10mm socket, eliminating the need to carry a 14mm hex bit.
- The purpose of double 14mm wrenches is for the mirror mounts (main thread + locknut).
- The stock kit included a 15mm Torx wrench, so I carry a T15 bit -- though I've yet to find any T15 applications on which to use it.
- I've been very happy with my decision to downsize from a 3/8" to 1/4" drive socket set, which more than halved the weight of [ratchet + 6" extension + swivel + 1/4"-3/8" adapter]. The 1/4" kit is a pleasure in the hands, and the only 3/8" dr. tools remaining in my kit are the spark plug wrench and 17mm socket, for which I use the step-up adapter.
My tool roll lives in that orange drybag on Badger's tail rack. Additionally, there and under the seat, I also carry:
